Grow Waterworks

The Grow Waterworks Garden in Belfast has been running since April 2010 and we've got a wonderful group of people growing incredible vegetables. Grow is a registered charity, and we currently run two community gardens. Our aim is to promote community development, tackle food poverty and improve health and wellbeing through organic community gardening and sustainable living.

The community garden at the Waterworks in North Belfast is managed by Grow and is set in an area of a Belfast City Council park. This public space has seen its fair share of trouble over the years and is protected by a huge fence. We have helped to turn this into a shared space, what was once a neglected corner of a park, a no mans land, has become an area where 20 or so gardeners from a wide variety of backgrounds and circumstances have come together to grow vegetable and their communities. And don’t think that it is only the participants who benefit from this experience, the garden is in full view of everyone who comes into the park, and they have enjoyed and been uplifted by seeing this ignored piece of land develop into the overflowing oasis that it is. The participants were recruited regardless of their gardening experience and have benefitted by being led through the growing season by the GROW team. As well as learning about growing vegetables and the obvious physical and psychological benefits of working outside and nurturing the land, there have been cross community workshops, trips to other community gardens and talks on related subjects.
